Although it might seem that long-haired Bengal cats are some new, exotic breed, the truth is that there have been Bengal kittens with long, soft coats from the beginnings of the Bengal breeding program. Every so often, a litter of Bengal kittens would have a baby with long hair amongst the traditional, short-haired kitties.

Some Bengal cats used in breeding can carry a recessive gene for long-haired. When a male and female Bengal each carry a copy of the recessive long hair gene, and those two Bengals are mated with each other, they can produce long-haired Bengals. In the past, long-haired offspring of Bengal matings were spayed or neutered until some breeders chose to develop the long-haired Bengal (which they called a Cashmere Bengal)

Cashmere Bengals are long hair Bengals. We found out in 2018 we had some cats with the long hair gene. I never bothered to test for long hair because honestly I knew nothing about the Cashmere Bengal. I never really heard of them, and have never seen one in person before. The first born here was in 2018. When she was a kitten I thought she was just in that awful Bengal fuzzy stage but for a longer time than usual.
